What’s the Difference Between Powertrain and Drivetrain?

drivetrain vs powertrain Volkswagen

How are powertrain and drivetrain different? In short, the drivetrain is what provides the power to move the wheels and the powertrain is made up of the motor and the drivetrain.

Powertrain or Drivetrain

You may not know off the top of your head what the benefits are of contrasting a drivetrain vs. powertrain however when you recognize the distinctions between both, it will certainly offer you the edge when car shopping, going to the mechanic, or when Alex Trebek asks you a Jeopardy question concerning automobile elements that make vehicles move.

Simply put, powertrains and drivetrains essentially do the exact same thing. They generate kinetic energy to make your car or truck ‘go’. Now, chances are that you’ve never really thought of exactly how important these moving components are. They’re the unsung heroes that get you from point A to point B and they each operate in their own distinct method.

What are the Drivetrain Parts?

Many times the terms ‘drivetrain’ and ‘powertrain’ are used interchangeably but, contrary to popular belief, they are not the same. So what exactly is the difference between powertrain elements and drivetrain components? The greatest difference is the way power is generated and distributed to the car.

A drivetrain is not actually a single part of your vehicle – it’s a group of drivetrain parts that work together with the engine to move the wheels and different parts of the vehicle to thrust it into motion. These parts usually include the transmission, differential, driveshaft, axles, CV joints, and the wheels.

How Does A Drivetrain Work?

This is the order of how power is produced and delivered by a drivetrain:

  • The engine will produce energy to power a flywheel
  • That flywheel works with the transmission to manage the amount of power dispersed to various other components of the drivetrain
  • The driveshaft rotates to produce power to a differential
  • The differential then supplies power from all those driveshaft elements and boom … your wheels are moving

Powertrain: What’s in it?

If you understood the drivetrain basics, the powertrain basics ought to be an easy idea to comprehend, due to the fact that there is just one specifying variable that sets them apart. That variable is the engine. In a powertrain, the engine is a part of the many moving parts. If you keep in mind from the paragraph above, the drivetrain works with the engine.

The powertrain encompasses every moving part that is essential to the automobile’s success. Its sole function is transforming kinetic energy into propulsion movement. If one of these parts fail your car may experience some uncommon rattling, or shaking.

I purchased another vehicle from Umansky in Glendale, WI. I feel fortunate that I have a reputable and reliable dealership near my residence. It makes it so much easier to have them nearby to assist when necessary. I have worked with Devin Hackney (Sales) for over the last four years and he is exceptional! I appreciated his proactive communications to initiate action before the end of my lease. He is very knowledgeable about the vehicles, has timely follow up, manages all the related activities, and really goes to bat for his customers!! I'm very happy with my vehicle and my ...

We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Volkswagen of Milwaukee North! David, our salesman, was friendly and so accommodating beginning with the very first time I called. He immediately invited us to come for a visit and take a test drive. He was polite, courteous and very informative. He responded immediately to answer questions that I had even though it was after hours. Two days later we completed all the power work and drove our new SUV home. Anthony was very professional when we completed all our financial paperwork as well. We highly recommend buying a car at this dealership!
