Golf R Basics and New Features
VW celebrates 50 years of the Golf lineup with exciting refreshes to the Golf R. The turbocharged engine is now tuned for 13 more horsepower and 15 more pound-feet of torque than the previous year, which makes it the most powerful Golf yet, with 328 hp and 310 lb-ft. The engine now pairs exclusively with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for incredibly smooth shifting, and new lightweight 19-inch wheels further enhance performance and handling.
The striking exterior has also been refreshed with an illuminated front logo, a standard lightbar, new headlights, and a new front bumper. Inside, there’s a new infotainment touchscreen and enhanced driver assistance technology. The Golf R Black Edition is also new this year and features blacked-out accents, wheels, brake calipers, and carbon fiber details. To further reduce the vehicle’s weight, a Euro Style Package is available, which removes the sunroof and adds fabric seats and a titanium exhaust.
Standard All-Wheel Drive
The Golf R comes with standard 4Motion all-wheel drive for optimal traction control. The system also includes a rear differential with the ability to actively distribute torque between the rear wheels to further improve handling.
Selectable Drive Modes
The Golf R comes with seven selectable drive modes to customize performance: Comfort, Race, Sport, Drift, Special, Individual, and the new Eco mode, which gives you the option to maximize fuel efficiency. Comfort mode has been updated with a higher shift point at approximately 100 rpm, and selecting Sport mode now disables the stop/start function.
Sleek Interior
The premium sport seats inside the 2025 Golf R feature a black-blue color pattern with “R” logos on the backrests, complemented by blue stitching and an “R” button on the leather sport steering wheel. Larger paddles make manual shifting more convenient, and hard buttons make the controls easier to navigate. A new 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen delivers the latest software and a revised menu structure for smoother operation, which includes a static lower control bar to easily access certain commands.
